Born in Boulder, Colorado I am married, mother of two teens, Robert and Gracie. The idea of writing a blog came up after years of acquiring habits, and tricks I use to save money and cut spending. I find my practices valuable and think others could benefit as well.
Why do I value frugality you ask? Well a big portion of our lives are spent working to make money, which is a necessity for most people in today’s society. There are many out there that do not utilize money in their life and get by just fine, but I choose to utilize it. My desire however is to decrease my spending however. You see, in acquiring money or income from work, there are many sacrifices one must make. Most importantly, time with family and time to focus on one’s self and health. In recent years the workplace, and society have put an emphasis on having more work life balance, as well as focus on mental health.
But I think we as individuals can do better. Life is short, and most people in the world work into old age and many until death. I’m not saying working is a bad thing, but that life can be more fulfilling when we don’t have the need to work so hard or so much. We must bargain however, and delve deeper into our values. Maybe it truly is material goods or the ability to have more for some people. But, for others like myself, I know I do not need a lot of material things to be happy but do know what I want more of. More time with friends, family, myself and the ability to travel and share experiences with those I love.
We live in a society of expectations to make enough money to own the right car, the right house, filled with everything you could possibly need, or not need. There is never enough. Trying to live up to the expectations of friends, family, and society puts us on a never ending wheel of always needing more, needing to make more money and own more things. When we set this bar, we will never be good enough, satisfied, grateful or truly happy.
Let’s stop for a moment and shed the expectations of everyone but ourselves. Let’s re-evaluate what we truly need to live and be content, without any expectations or perceived expectations of others. It can be a stretch and a hard place to go to as we have lived with these “expectations” our whole lives. Consider the car or cars you drive. Why did you buy them? Was it for status? Consider your home. Do you need all of the space that you have? When you are accustomed to it you feel like you need it right? It could be a challenge to downsize and do without some things. That’s exactly how I see frugality. It’s an opportunity to challenge yourself and evaluate what you can do without or less of and be mindful of purchases while keeping your personal values and goals in mind. In this blog I will explore how to live frugally in day to day living, by downsizing and focusing more on needs vs. wants, and enjoying travel with a frugal mindset.
One of the biggest killers of your savings is unnecessary spending. How do you keep from going over budget and only buying what you need? I have always kept a list. ...
So I just got back from a vacation to Hawaii, specifically the Big Island with my husband, two kids, mother in law, sister in law and nephew. It is true what they say about it being ...
It's always good at any stage to revisit whether or not it is feasable to downsize to meet one's financial goals.
